Part 2 – The events of 2020 helped to grow Sew Sophie Crafts even further that I could have imagined!
To say that the first UK lockdown was a whirlwind for my business would be an understatement. I set up my business in October 2019, creating and selling cross stitch kits, and up to February 2020 I considered myself to be doing well for a new business still growing and finding its feet.
When lockdown hit it felt like the whole of the UK (and further afield) went in search for something to keep their minds occupied, and on that search they found cross stitch. Over a matter of weeks, I went from an order level of around 20-30 a month, to 30-40 every single day – for which I was somewhat unprepared! The biggest challenge I faced was bringing in the level of stock I needed to fulfil those orders and with postal delays and supplier issues this was not an easy task. My husband was promoted to chief order packer and every night we sat on the floor of our living room surrounded by boxes and packing tape and wrapped and packed the next bundle of orders.
Although it felt completely crazy (and at points a bit overwhelming) it was a very welcome distraction to what was going on in the outside world. Helping to keep the UK preoccupied, in turn kept me occupied and I cannot put into words how grateful I have been for the support I have received for my business in the months following.
This period has not only grown my customer base, but it has given me a new sense of what I can achieve as an individual and as a business owner. I have now been able to invest in my own website, branded packaging and custom-made stitching accessories and I am really excited for what 2021 has to offer.
I have worked incredibly hard to build my business to where it is today, but there is no doubt that the events of 2020 helped to grow Sew Sophie Crafts even further that I could have imagined. I wonder what this year will bring?
